Corn Head Gathering Chains
The very first successful corn combine that used corn gathering chains was manufactured in 1929 by the Gleaner-Baldwin Company. However, major developments didn't begin until after World War II when the engineers at John Deere produced and successfully offered a corn head combine mount in 1954. Corn head gathers use chains (known as corn head gathering chain) running in a ramp mechanism to gather the stalks and then cut them with pairs of circular saw blades, then an auger-type mechanism feeds the plants into a threshing cylinder. Since then a few things have changed, but the general concept and operation has remained the same.
