The conveyor screw is the primary component in any screw conveyor, hence the naming. We offer a wide variety of standard and custom-designed conveyor screws for a wide range of applications and material handling requirements. Types of standard conveyor screws include:
Helicoid Conveyor Screws, which are manufactured by cold rolling specific grades of steel into a continuous helix design. This style offers superior strength due to their pitch, diameter, and thickness being closely controlled.
Special Conveyor Screw Designs:
- Sectional Flight Conveyor screws are manufactured from blank steel plates formed into a helix, the sections are then butted up to one another and welded. This style is formed with a lead longer than their pitch to assure a proper and tight gripping action with the pipe. The benefit of this style is they can be continuously welded onto one another on either side and locked into place with internal collars, giving them more adaptability and sectional replaceability features. Additional material options for these are stainless steel, Monel, brass, copper, or any specified material needed.
- Ribbon Conveyor Screws are designed in a way that allows them to convey sticky or gummy materials. They are also commonly found in mixing applications, this is due to the open "ribbon" design of the screw. These flights are fastened to the pipe using special Nu-Weld lugs, which eliminate the need for drilling holes and they utilize seamless internal collars for each end.
- Quick Change Conveyor Screws are manufactured in a proprietary way in which you can perform screw changes and maintenance without the need of disassembling the entire conveyor. This option is available for every standard, sectional, and ribbon conveyor screw type.
The double flight
design is designed with two rows of flighting that are the same hand (right or left) wrapped around the screw conveyor pipe. This design has an outcome of more evenly dispersed discharge from the system which minimizes surges, this can be particularly desirable when feeding into a scale hopper. Typically the double flighting is only required for the last two or three pitches prior to discharge to accomplish its purpose.
The short pitch
design is usually half a pitch but has the ability to be any pitch under standard full pitch and is often utilized in the complete incline length of a conveyor to maintain consistent material transfer. In a horizontal screw conveyor application, the half-pitch is fitted under the choke feed hoppers to create a lowering of cross-section load beyond the feed area which permits the use of intermediate hanger bearings and extended conveyor lengths. inevitably with a half-pitch design, the conveyor will have half the capacity than that of a full-pitch screw conveyor under the same cross-section load and speed. Variable pitch conveyor screws
are typically placed under long storage hoppers and are used as feeder screws, this design allows a draw off of material for the length of the opening. Otherwise material will flow from the extreme feed end of the opening only and if the hopper is never completely emptied material can stagnate.
The tapered diameter conveyor screws
have a design that also creates a draw off of material for the length of the opening. This screw type is often utilized with half-pitch screws to create greater flexibility within a screw conveyor system when utilizing a tapered screw design the trough should also be tapered to minimize the bed of material in the trough at the end feed. Cut flight conveyor screws
are made by cutting deep notches in the flight to create a highly effective method of mixing dry materials, especially at high speeds, the material is chopped and agitated as it is conveyed. This design is also useful when conveying materials that tend to lump or ball up.
The cut and folded screw
design creates an even greater agitating and mixing action than the cut flight design. It's also useful for cooling and or drying materials in conjunction with dome-type conveyors.
For specific mixing applications, we supply a mixing paddle screw
type that can be designed in conjunction with any standard or non-standard screw. These paddles are welded in place at the hand opposite to the hand of the screw flighting and can also be adjusted in hand as well as pitch.
For applications that require the greatest stirring action while conveying while efficiency is of no importance flighting can be eliminated entirely resulting in a paddle conveyor
A solid shaft screw conveyor
is designed for extreme load-bearing applications and is typically used in shorter screw conveying applications. These screws offer exceptional additional torque capacities. To order specify the information on the above diagram. Corrosion and Abrasion Resistant Conveyor Screws:
- We also supply conveyor screws furnished in abrasion-resistant metals such as 40/50 carbon, T-I, nickel, or steel coated with special materials such as stellite, Postalloy, Airco, etc... It's important to note that when handling abrasive material you should also protect the conveyor accessories including the trough.
- There's also the option of using Hammond hard-surface conveyor screws, these screws are designed to prolong the life of the flights while handling abrasive materials. This style permanently infuses an alloy to the carrying side of the flighting face, it is also applied along the ends of the flighting up to the pipe to reduce wear at the hanger joints where some material buildup generally occurs.
- For corrosion resistance, we supply screws made from special materials such as stainless steel, Monel, Inconel, Cor-Ten, and more. They can also be hot-dipped galvanized for mildly corrosive applications.
- Fully stainless steel conveyor screws can also be supplied and are typically used in food, pharmaceutical, chemical, and any other application that requires washdown, corrosion resistance, or extreme operating temperatures. We also supply the accompanying accessories in stainless steel as well.
Pipe bushings, also known as internal collars are a standard component in basically every screw conveyor type to create a close fit to the end or coupling shafts. It's important to notate that when ordered separately pupe bushings will not be drilled for the coupling bolts since they and the pipe ends are drilled after assembly.
End lugs are formed from heavy-gauge steel and are designed to provide the greatest amount of support to the conveyor flighting with the least possible obstruction to the flow of material. When ordering end lugs specify whether the lugs are required for the feed or the discharge end and if they are for a right-hand or left-hand screw conveyor.
Screw conveyor couplings require a very specific and special bolt type referred to as a Tem-U-Lac bolt. These bolts and the nuts accompanying them are forged from high analysis steel to give them the required toughness for the severe-duty service life ahead of them. It has a hex head and precision cut threading to the exact length required so that it does not come into contact with the pipe walls, which would result in a cut or wear of the pipe walls. The self-locking nut features a stainless steel pin that follows the bolt thread while the nut is being tightened down. This specific design prevents the nut from vibrating or working its self loose, which can cause screw conveyor damage and downtime. Intriguingly enough though it easily will loosen when pressure is applied to it through an ordinary wrench.
Utilizing a special cold-rolled premium shaft, coupling shafts are precision jig drilled to assure an exact match with the jig-drilled screw conveyor pipe. For standard non-abrasive materials, a standard cold-rolled coupling is recommended, and for highly abrasive materials we offer coupling shafts that have case been hardened with a tough ductile core. For high-torque applications, the shafts are designed with three coupling bolts instead of two. in this circumstance, the screw conveyor drive, tail, and coupling shafts are all precisely jig-drilled to match the three holes in the conveyor pipe. Screw conveyor hangers are made to hold the screws (augers) within the bearing selection of choice in place within the trough of a screw conveyor. All babbit, bronze, and ball bearing hangers come standard with lubrication pipe and grease fittings. Lube pipes and grease fitting are also available with other bearing types as well upon request. Hangers are also available to order in abrasive and or anti-corrosive materials upon request.
Type 220 Hanger:
This hanger style is one of the most common types because of its design that offers the least amount of possible obstruction in material flow. The design also features wide top bars for better stability when mounting across trough flange points. Standard bearings used in a 220 screw conveyor hanger include babbitt, hard iron, Arguto, wood, bronze, Nylon, or Nylatron, additional special order options include bronze Oilite, Gatke, Stellite, Teflon, or any other conceivable bearing material. Type 226 Hanger:
Style 226 screw conveyor hangers are the most commonly used hanger type because of a design that offers the least amount of possible obstruction in material flow and because it mounts completely inside of the trough, making it suitable for dust-tight and weather-tight covers. This style also is designed with wide top bars for better stability when mounting across trough flange points, and a grease fitting port for re-lube. Standard bearings used in a 220 screw conveyor hanger include babbitt, hard iron, Arguto, wood, bronze, Nylon, or Nylatron, additional special order options include bronze Oilite, Gatke, Stellite, Teflon, or any other conceivable bearing material.Type 230 Hanger:
Type 230 conveyor hangers are designed for the most severe and rugged applications, they typically are supplied with hard-iron bearings but Arguto Wood bearings are also available. This style features wide top bars for greater stability when mounting across trough flange joints. Type 216 Hanger:
Type 216 hangers are designed in a way that allows them to be mounted inside of the trough, making them suitable for applications that require dust and or weatherproof covers. this style is designed for heavy-duty and rugged application and utilizes wide top bars for greater stability when mounting across trough flange joints. They typically are supplied with hard-iron bearings but Arguto Wood bearings are also available.
Type 260 Hanger:
Type 260 hangers operate quieter and require lower power inputs due to the use of self-aligning ball bearings. Typically this type is utilized in long screw conveying applications that operate at higher speeds but are not recommended for applications with dirty, gritty, or abrasive materials. Alemite bearings are generally furnished in these hangers, they can also be referred to as "lubed for life" bearings. 260 hangers utilize a wide top bar design for greater stability when mounting across trough flange joints, this is particularly important when using self-aligning ball bearings.
Type 270 Hanger:
Type 270 hangers operate quieter and require lower power inputs due to the use of self-aligning ball bearings. Typically this type is utilized in long screw conveying applications that operate at higher speeds but are not recommended for applications with dirty, gritty, or abrasive materials. This design is typically preferred because it allows for mounting to occur completely inside the trough which allows for weatherproof and or dustproof covers to be utilized if necessary. Alemite bearings are generally furnished in these hangers, they can also be referred to as "lubed for life" bearings. 270 hangers utilize a wide top bar design for greater stability when mounting across trough flange joints, this is particularly important when using self-aligning ball bearings.
Type 326 Hanger:
Type 326 hangers are designed for use in applications conveying hot materials for lengths consisting of three or more screw sections. The top bars are designed in a way that allows them to freely slide on the angle guides, compensating for any unequal expansion between the trough and screw conveyor. The 326 is designed to fit within the trough beneath the forever and is suitable for use with a dust-tight or weather-proof cover. The special design also offers minimal resistance of material flow and removal bearings made of special materials can be furnished for specific application requirements. Premium hard-iron bearings and hardened steel conveyor couplings will be furnished unless otherwise specified.
Flared Trough Type Hanger:
Flared trough hangers are made for flared troughs and can be furnished in any hanger style offered, or specially designed hangers can be supplied upon request to meet exact application requirements. Standard bearings used in flared trough hangers include babbitt, hard iron, Arguto, wood, bronze, Nylon, or Nylatron, additional special order options include bronze Oilite, Gatke, Stellite, Teflon, or any other conceivable bearing material.
Transmission flange bearings are manufactured of fabricated steel with machine-finished backings and end faces. Additional clearance is provided at the base of the bolt holes to make installation and assembly easier. The bearings are accurately broached to precision transmission tolerances and the bore is concentric the flange back. 1/8" (0.125") alternative fittings are furnished and the bearings are grooved to distribute the lubricant uniformly. These bearings are also supplied with a grease fitting for relubricating and routine maintenance.
Trough Ends are placed at the ends of a screw conveyor system. We offer a slew of options when it comes to different trough ends as well as anti-corrosive and abrasion-resistant trough ends for specific application needs.
Style 100 Trough Ends:
This style of trough end is a steel plate that is typically fitted with babbitted transmission flange bearings, although any bearing material may be used. The top flange supports the cover of the conveyor so this means that the system must be supported either from above or a foot on the trough end flange. Style 101 Trough Ends:
Style 101 trough ends are also a steel plate that is typically fitted with babbitted transmission flange bearings, although any bearing material may be used. However, with this design there is a top and bottom flange, meaning the top flange supports the screw conveyor cover while the bottom flange supports the bottom of the conveyor. Style 102 Trough Ends:
Style 102 trough ends are considered anti-friction type because it is equipped with self-aligning ball bearings, which also allows for several degrees of end shaft misalignment. This style is not recommended for use with the drive shaft unless it is for very light-duty applications, drive shafts are usually recommended to be equipped with Chevron end thrusts or another type of rigid bearing support bearing type. The top flange supports the cover of the conveyor so this means that the system must be supported either from above or a foot on the trough end flange.Style 103 Trough Ends:
Style 103 trough ends are also considered anti-friction type because it is equipped with self-aligning ball bearings, which also allows for several degrees of end shaft misalignment. This style is not recommended for use with the drive shaft unless it is for very light-duty applications, drive shafts are usually recommended to be equipped with Chevron end thrusts or another type of rigid bearing support bearing type. The top flange supports the cover of the conveyor so this means that the system must be supported either from above or a foot on the trough end flange. Style 104 and 107 Discharge Trough Ends:
Styles 104 and 107 trough ends are known as discharge trough ends because it is designed to be used in where the material is to flow out of the end of the trough and when the material loading does not exceed 45%. Style 104 is fitted with a self-aligning ball bearing while style 107 is typically fitted with a babbit flange bearing with the exception of two or three-bolt flanged style dependent on the shaft size. With the 104 style, shaft sizes of 1-1/2" or 2" will be fitted with a two-bolt flange and others with a three-bolt flange bearing. Style 114 and 115 Flared Trough Ends:
Styles 114 and 115 trough ends are considered flared trough ends because of their design. Flared trough ends are formed with a top flange that supports the screw conveyor cover and a cotton flange that serves the purposes of being feet. Its design fits the contour of a flared trough and can be fitted with babbitted flange bearings as well as anti-friction self-aligning ball bearings. They can also use flange bearings of bronze, Arguto wood, Nylon, Bronze Oilite, or any other conceivable bearing material based on the application's needs. The endplate of a flared trough end can also be fitted with a Chevron or Hammond end thrust bearing. Bolt-On Shelf Trough Ends:
Bolt-on shelf trough ends are specially developed with bolt-on pump type seals to be adaptable to existing trough ends. This provides a cost-saving inventory reduction due to their interchangeability. The bolt-on shelf style trough ends allow for the outboard mounting of bearings which makes maintenance considerably easier. The shelf not only offers a solid mount for the bearing but provides stability for drives that include chain, v-belts, direct connect, or the use of a shaft mount reducer. The drive shaft between the bearing and seal is exposed, this makes the bearing run cooler resulting in an extended seal and bearing life. The bolt-on pump style seal is available in eight standard bore sizes and is also field adaptable on existing trough ends. This shelf offers maximum flexibility by being able to also use traditional split end seals and waste pack seals. Standardly these are made from high-quality steel but abrasion and corrosion resistant configurations can be supplied upon request.
WPS Packing Seal:
The packing seal housing plays an important role by protecting the trough end bearings from material leakage and to protect the material being conveyed from the bearing lubricant. They are offered as either lip-type or waste pack seals, or even a combination of the two. Waste packing is primarily the standard and will be supplied unless otherwise specified. Split Seal Glands:
Split seal glands are made with twisted packing to prevent leakage of material being conveyed and to protect the material from the bearing lubricant, moisture, or dirt contamination. This style is generally used on shelf ends due to the split design that allows for easy assembly and repacking. Pump Seal Type:
The pump seal type is designed for the most severe of applications, particularly when positive or negative pressure must be maintained. This seal type can also be fitted with lantern rings and air or gas purge fittings, though it can only be used for an outboard shelf type trough end.
Roller bearings are designed with a larger contact area than that of a ball bearing and therefore can support astonishing loads for long periods of time. Thrust bearings are made to support heavy loads at high-speeds and support thrust capacities when needed. Chevron End Thrust Bearings:
Designed to handle medium to heavy thrust loads the Chevron End Thrust has adequate support and capacities to handle the loads from screw conveyors. It can handle thrust loads from either direction at any time. We offer these bearings because when a screw conveyor is first starting, thrust loads are created in the direction opposite to the flow of material. If the thrust is not properly maintained and managed the hanger bearings, trough, and screw will wear at a highly increased rate. These heavy-duty thrust bearings can be supplied with either a drive or end shaft, and it is recommended that the screw conveyor be driven through this type of thrust unit rather than a self-aligning ball bearing. Hammond Roller Bearing End Thrust With Trough End:
This design utilizes a heavy-duty dual tapered roller bearing end thrust that is designed for extra-heavy radial and thrust loads in either direction. Although the Hammond roller bearing thrust bearing is normally mounted on a steel plate trough end, the trough end is not furnished unless requested on the order.Bronze Washer Type End Thrust:
These assemblies either consist of one bronze and two steel washers or one machined bronze washer, one steel washer, the Tru-Arc Ring, and a precision-machined ring groove on the shaft it's self. Bronze Washer Inside Type BW-1
is mounted inside the conveyor trough at the inlet end, this inexpensive assembly handles light to moderate compression thrust loads and consists of a transmission bronze washer that is flanked on each side by a machined steel washer.Bronze Washer Outside Type BW-
2 is mounted at the discharge end of the conveyor, this assembly handles light tension thrust loads and is designed with a transmission bronze washer that is healed in place by being placed between the face trough, the bearing hub, and a machined steel washer which is all held in place by a Tru-Arc Thrust Ring.
A double-flanged screw conveyor trough is designed in a way that amplifies the strength and rigidity of the conveyor without adding any additional weight. Additionally, this trough design provides an excellent dust-tight and weather-resistant screw conveyor when combined with the Barron flange cover. The double flange troughs are available in sizes up to 24" and in material gauges up to 10-gauge. They can also be supplied in stainless steel, abrasion-resistant materials, or any other metal alloy required for the application. Nu-Weld end flanges are continuously jig-welded on each end to assure exact alignment and tight connection joints. If supporting feet are required or preferred they are spaced at the flange joints, trough saddles are also available.
The Barron cover is specifically designed to be used with a double flanged screw conveyor trough. It's designed with gaskets between the cover and the trough, its not weather-proof but does supply a degree of protection against the weather, the same follows for the Barron clamps. For additional protection you can mount battens that lap the cover joints, the cover should be bolted or screw clamped at that time as well. These flange covers are also able to be used with angle troughs, in which case they should be bolted or screw clamped.
Angle troughs are designed and fitted with high-strength structural steel angels along the top edge of the trough, providing excellent additional strength, rigidity, and support to all trough sizes and gauges. Nu-Weld end flanges are continuously jig-welded to each end to assure alignment and tight connecting joints. Angel troughs can be formed from hot rolled steel, stainless steel, or other alloys in all sizes and gauges, they can also optionally be hot-dipped galvanized. Trough modifications can be applied such as having a perforated bottom, a drop bottom, for sanitary installations, jacketing for heating and cooling, or additional specified modifications. They are typically supplied with a Tite-Seal Cover but other types of covers such as dome, flanged, hip-roof, or more can be specified. If supporting feet are needed they will be mounted at the flange joints, trough saddles are also available.
These tite-seal covers are designed for use with screw conveyor angle troughs. They provide excellent protection for dust and debris for the conveyor due to a specially formed U edge that runs along both sides of the trough containing sponge rubber and seals to cover the trough. The tite-seal quick-release cover clamps hold the entire assembly in place and are designed in a way that allows for quick access to the trough interior. Additionally, a special gasket is attached to the underside of the cover clamp that seals the joint that is between lengths of the screw conveyor.
The flared trough is designed to allow the standard 1/2" clearance between the screw and the trough bottom, the flared sides of the trough improve the feeding and conveying action especially on materials that are not entirely free-flowing or material in large slabs or pieces. The top edges are flared to provide cover support and nu-weld steel end flanges are continuously jig-welded to each end to assure alignment and tight joints. In some instances where the application conditions require it, flared troughs can be furnished in stainless steel, Monel, or other specific alloys required. The trough covers are typically bolted on or furnished with screw or spring clamps that may be flat for interior installations or hip-roof for exterior installations.

Channel Trough Style:
The channel trough style is designed with a separate rolled or formed steel bottom for use where severe abrasive or corrosive factors are present, which results in frequent trough replacement. The bottom is bolted to the structural steel side channels making a very rigid unit that can be used where trough supports are widely spaced.
Dust Seal Trough Style:
This trough type is formed with "Z" bars along the topsides and channels across the top width, forming a continuous pocket into which the flanged on all four sides cover fits. This pocket can essentially be filled with sand, sponge rubber, or the material being conveyed to provide a dust-tight seal that still allows for quick access to the trough interior.
Jacketed Trough Style:
The jacketed trough style is used to carry an agent for heating, cooling, or drying of the material while it is being conveyed. It's important to note that this trough style is not designed or constructed to be pressure vessels. A former jacket is continuously welded to a standard trough to produce the intended results. Jacketed troughs can be supplied as various standards; therefore, please contact us before ordering.
Tite-Seal Drop Bottom Trough Style:
This style is designed for applications that need to be frequently cleaned to combat infestation, contamination, or buildup. It achieves quick access by having a hinged and latched side for easy opening and access to the internal parts of the screw conveyor. The edges of the opening are fitted with gaskets to seal once closed and clamps are secured. The tire-seal trough can be supplied as a single or double flanged unit that is fitted with your cover of choice.
- The hinge side and latch side are adjustable to secure the seal
- Product pressure points are reinforced to prevent leakage
- Drop bottoms fit standard troughs of 10-gauge and heavier thicknesses
Screw conveyors can be fitted with additional trough covers and shrouds to meet the exact application requirements. Standard designs are not intended to be weather resistant, airtight, or pressure-tight. For special requirements please contact our customer support team.
Semi-flanged covers are flat covers with a slight crimp on both sides for increased strength and rigidity. They can be fastened to the trough by bolts, spring, or screw clamps. Semi-flanged trough covers are not considered weather-proof but through the addition of gaskets and battens at the cover joints, a reasonably tight construction can be achieved. Hip Roof Covers:
Hip roof covers are designed for outdoor applications by way of its pitched "roof" design. The cover is flanged down on both sides and fitted with battens at the cover joints and rubber joints are typically furnished all around. Fastening is done usually by bolting, but screw clamps can also be supplied upon request. Shrouds:
Shrouds are designed to be incorporated in feeder style conveyors to baffle the flow of material. They are also designed to fit inside a standard trough to create a tubular effect for inclined operation, covers of any construction are then used over shrouds as required.
Trough conveyor clamps are intended for securing the trough covers, we offer an array of styles and custom solutions for screw conveyor trough cover clamps.
Spring Cover Clamp:
Steel spring cover clamps are commonly used for flat or semi-flanged trough covers for screw conveyors. Spring cover clamps are typically placed at 2" 6ft centers or if gaskets are used 15" or closer centers. Screw Cover Clamp:
Screw clamps can be used for flat or other special trough covers and are usually located on 30" centers or if gaskets are present they are placed at 15" centers or closer. Screw clamps are also used to clamp the bottom of drop-bottom troughs. Continuous Cover Clams:
This style clamp is a heavy-gauge spring clamp furnished in 5ft lengths. It was designed to fasten a flat cover to the conveyor trough or for fastening a drop-bottom or quick-opening trough or casing section. The continuous cover clamp can be supplied as black iron or stainless steel and can be supplied with or without locking pins on each end. Quick-Release Clamps:
The Barron Cover Clamp is a quick release clamp designed with a buckle mechanism for tight assembly and easy dis-assembly. This style clamp provides an easier method of accessing the internal components of a screw conveyor.
The Tite-Seal Cover Clamp is also a quick-release clamp with a similar design. However, it is made for dust and weather-resistant troughs.
Supporting feed provides the means of aligning and fastening the trough to the floor or a preexisting structure at the trough joints. The trough end height is accurately maintained and the feet permit the removal of a trough end without disturbing the entire unit. Saddle:
Saddles are used to support the trough between the trough sections and fasten to the floor or existing structures, the total height from the floor is the same as for a trough end with feet. Flanges:
Nu-Weld end flanges are made of heavy-gauge steel to assure a close accurate fit with the conveyor trough and the trough ends or the following end flange, bolt holes are jig-punched to assure exact and flawless alignment.
Rack and Pinion discharge gates with curved sides have special cut tooth racks installed to the curved side plate. The rack engages a tooth-cut pinion shaft and is operated by a hand wheel as pictured above. Chain wheels with chain can be supplied as an alternate configuration if desired. The curved sides conform with the contour of the trough and eliminate all pockets that might trap the metal in a spout above a flat side. These slides are also able to be powered slides with the use of electric motors, air, or hydraulic cylinders. Flat Side:
Rack and pinion discharge gates with flat sides also have special cut tooth racks installed to the curved side plate. The rack engages a tooth-cut pinion shaft and is operated by a hand wheel as pictured above. Chain wheels with chain can be supplied as an alternate configuration if desired. Flat sides allow for operation in any one of four positions if clearance is adequate. These slides are also able to be powered slides with the use of electric motors, air, or hydraulic cylinders.
A discharge assembly as shown previously can be undesirable in certain applications, but very desirable in circumstances where the material has the tendency to build up between the edge of the discharge opening and the inside of the trough and place at the extreme end of the screw conveyor. This is because the spout can be mounted flush with the end of the trough and the trough end modified to act as the fourth side of the discharge spout, this end can be used on most standard and specially designed troughs.Tubular Screw Conveyors:
Tubular screw conveyors are typically designed for incline operation as the round trough design results in greater efficiency on the incline.
